Judge Vicki Cook Visits Jessieville

Judge Cook Visits Jessieville 7th graders

Friday, Judge Vicki Cook visited with Jessieville 7th grade Speech students in the VML library. The topic was “Verbal vs. Non-verbal Communication in the Courtroom”. The students were given firsthand knowledge of how people we meet everyday are interpreting both what and how we say things. She went on to elaborate that there are times when our body language is judged, for example when testimony is given. Judge Cook called on several students to non-verbally cue the audience as to their mood or message without saying a word. Students asked many questions from the youngest person to face court charges to how you can become a Judge. Perhaps one day, a Jessieville graduate can fill those shoes. But, as Judge Cook advised, that person must love the job. It is obvious from her visit that Judge Cook loves working with youth and is especially dedicated to Garland County.

Mrs. Johnson's 8th Grade AR History

Students researched the 6 geographical regions of Arkansas in their cooperative learning groups. Each group then chose one region to build a topographical map of Arkansas out of clay. Lastly, they had to investigate one environmental issue of Arkansas and write an interview between a local newscaster and an Arkansas environmentalist. The pictures are from that interview.

Hanamaki Visitor

On Wednesday, January 23, 2013, Jessieville Middle School was privileged to have Mr. Ken Kanazawa from Hanamaki, Japan visit our school. Mr. Kanazawa was in Hot Springs as part of a city staff exchange sponsored by Hot Springs' sister city of Hanamaki. Jessieville Middle School is the only school that Mr. Kanazawa visited while in the United States. He toured the school campus, attended classes with the students, and ate lunch with the students. At the end of the day, he presented Mrs. Speers with different Japanese toys for the students.

Jessieville Middle School would like to thank Mary Neilson, Sister City Program Coordinator, for arranging Mr. Kanazawa's visit to the school.

8th Grade English Project

Mrs. Sikes next eighth grade project will be autobiographical silhouettes. The students have to complete numerous autobiographical writing assignments in a decorative format and include their silhouette. This is a partially collaborative project since each student must draw another person's name and then contribute a vocabulary word and a sentence for that person's poster.

Ruben deHaas displays a sample of an autobiographical silhouette poster.

January 7, 2012

It was an exciting time at Jessieville Middle School today after being gone for two weeks. Students received new schedules this morning resulting in some schedule changes. Students are asked to refrain from requesting any scheduling changes except in unusual circumstances.

I am hopeful that report cards can be printed and sent home with students later this week. We are having some issues with the grading program, but school personnel are working with the Arkansas Department of Education to correct these problems as soon as possible.

7th grade basketball games for this evening have been cancelled.

5th Grade Flag Presentation Assembly

The 5th grade students at Jessieville Middle School made a flag to represent that we are one with our community.
At the beginning of the school year, the 5th grade students began learning about the 50 states. Each day, students used technology to look up information about each of the states. They researched things such as imports, exports, size, population, state flag and state seal. While doing this daily assignment, students noticed that every state has its own flag and seal. They thought that they would like to have a flag and seal for Jessieville School and community. The project started. Students drew up pictures of flags and voted on the one they liked best and then school community supporters were added to the flag. The design was taken to Sew Perfect for completion. For two weeks, 5th graders held fund raisers at recess to earn the funds for the project. When completed, a states PowerPoint, song and flag were presented to our superintendent Mr. Curry during an assembly on November 20, 2012.

Veteran's Day Assembly

On November 8, 2012, Jessieville Middle School held an assembly in honor of Veteran's Day. After the singing of the "Star Spangled Banner" by a quartet of Jessieville High School students, Rylynn Wheeler gave a history of Veteran's Day. Numerous middle school students read essays they had written about our country, veterans, the pledge, and what they would tell our founding fathers. The middle school band performed two patriotic songs and the 6th grade chorus sang two songs. It was a moving assembly attended by all Jessieville Middle School students and teachers and by several parents and community members. I look forward to next year's asssembly.
